Lazy Kitchen Ep. 16: Gyoza Fried Rice

Who isn’t a big fan of gyoza?

Introduction: Gyoza and Gyoza Fried Rice

Before anyone gets the wrong idea, this isn’t a post about making gyoza from scratch.

Gyoza is basically pan-fried dumplings from Japan. The texture is both chewy and crispy, thanks to the steaming/boiling and frying process. They are simply delicious. I also love the sauce that it typically comes with.

Usually, gyoza is filled with ground pork, chives, garlic and cabbage. For some reason I typically encounter vegetable gyoza more. So I associate gyoza with a healthy gustatory experience.

Tita Emm’s Frozen Gyoza

So there’s this Japanese food counter that we always visit when we find ourselves in the Makati Square area. They’re a really small stall, but people flock to them because they sell authentic Japanese food at a really affordable price. #NotSponsored

Because of the pandemic, they’ve had to adjust their business model. The gyoza, tonkatsu, tamagoyaki are all now coming to our home instead!!! I think that’s absolutely fantastic for budding cooks and Japanese food lovers like me.

Their frozen gyoza comes in packs of 12. They included instructions on how to cook them. I cooked one batch following their instructions to the letter. And then I cooked another batch after watching several gyoza videos on YouTube. It’s still fairly easy either way. :)

The first time I tried cooking the gyoza, I half-succeeded (left) and half-failed (right). I think it was because I tried to fit all 12 pieces in the same small pan, so trying to get everything out in one piece was just a big hassle.

Ingredients for Gyoza Fried Rice

I’ve made fried rice several times before. In fact it’s one of the earlier episodes this quarantine.

The ingredients always change but as long as there’s some meat, something red, something green, and soy sauce, it’s good to go.

For this version, I prepared only 1 cup of gyoza fried rice. I used:

  • 1 cup of cooked white rice
  • 3 pieces of frozen gyoza, chopped into little bite-sized pieces
  • 1 tbsp of vegetable oil
  • 1 to 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1/2 carrot, diced
  • 2 tbsp of spring onions, chopped (it might also have been cabbage… I can’t remember…)
  • 1 tsp of soy sauce (adjust to taste)
  • 1 egg
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Gyoza Fried Rice Recipe

Yum!!!!!!

Prep time: 5 minutes

Cook time: 10 minutes

  1. Sauté garlic in oil until golden brown.
  2. Add chopped frozen gyoza and diced carrots. Cook for at least 2 minutes.
  3. Add rice. Mix well.
  4. Add soy sauce. Mix.
  5. Add egg. Beat in the pan and scramble. Something like that.
  6. Salt and pepper to taste.
  7. Add spring onions. It’s ready for serving.
  8. Serve and enjoy!!!

I took a photo with the other gyoza I prepared for the family, but I really didn’t eat the fried rice with another viand. Fried rice is always good enough on its own.

Until next time!
