A must-know in any lazy kitchen –healthy, tasty, and takes less than 5 minutes.
Introduction: The 5-minute Omelette
In my personal ranking of egg dishes, I firmly believe that omelette is best, followed by scrambled eggs and poached eggs, then hard-boiled, then sunny side up. I have no basis for this ranking but you have to trust me.
The omelette is a tasty dish made from beaten eggs fried with butter or oil in a pan. The best omelettes are made with fillings such as chives and onion (my favorite!). I feel extra healthy when I eat omelette with vegetables.
But because this is a lazy kitchen, I didn’t fry the omelette with either butter or oil. In fact, I didn’t fry it at all. My lazy kitchen omelettes are usually born from the microwave, and I’ve been doing this since college.
This crazy quick fix is great as breakfast with rice, as filling in an eggy sandwich, or on its own as a late-night high-value high-cholesterol snack.
5 Ingredients in My 5-Minute Omelette
I make this omelette with literally whatever’s in the pantry. There is no rhyme or reason to this mess. For the meat, I also sometimes use leftovers from actual breakfast or from the day before.
For this particular recipe, I used:
- 1/2 sliced ham
- 1 small tomato
- 1/4 bell pepper for the aroma
- A bit of whole milk for extra creaminess
- 1 medium-sized egg

I tried to look for broccoli or anything green in our vegetable drawer… There was nothing. Curse this quarantine.
5-Minute Omelette Recipe
Whether you set it in the microwave or fry it in a pan, an omelette is really only going to take 1-2 minutes to cook. The rest of the 5 minutes is for chopping and beating that egg up.
Aside from its super quick cooking time, omelettes are also truly lazy because they give the appearance of effort (versus a plain sunny side up) when really you did close to nothing. Sprinkle a bit of parsley and pretend it’s even fancier, haha!

Prep time: 2-3 minutes
Cook time: 1-2 minutes
Microwave (Broke College) Version:
- Add sliced ham, chopped tomato and bell pepper in a small bowl.
- Add some milk.
- Add the egg.
- Mix. Beat that mixture.
- Salt and pepper to taste.
- Pop the bowl into the microwave at high heat for a minute or less.
- Check and give it a stir.
- Pop it in for another 15 seconds.
- Add some garnish.
- Enjoy!
Through experience (as if!), it’s easy to overcook the egg in the microwave, so you can start with maybe 45 seconds only and cook in increments of 15 seconds from there.
Bonus: 5-Minute Fried Version
Inspired by me (lol), Ate Risa made the same 5-minute omelette in an actual frying pan. It tasted way better because she added onion and garlic (which I don’t trust would cook in a microwave).
Ingredients in the 5-Minute Omelette Version 2
- 5 medium eggs
- 3 to 4 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1 onion, diced
- 3/4 bell pepper (the remains from my experiment lol)
- 2 tomatoes, cubed
- 2 hotdog, sliced
5-Minute Omelette Version 2 Recipe
- Saute onion and garlic.
- Add tomatoes, bell pepper, hotdog.
- Beat 5 medium eggs. Add salt and pepper to taste.
- Add eggs to pan.
- Cook for 2 minutes.
- Enjoy!

That’s it for my staple lazy kitchen egg dish!!! Even an omelette with just onion and chives can already bring so much joy to my mornings…
Until next time!
