Rotten to the Core (Rotten to the Core!) – DCOM Descendants (2015)

Rating: I surprisingly had fun. Just good, clean and nostalgic fun.

Details: Disney Channel Original Movie Descendants (2015) follows the story of Mal, Evie, Jay and Carlos, the maybe-evil descendants of the exiled classic villains Maleficent, the Evil Queen, Jafar and Cruella de Vil, respectively, as they are invited to go to Auradon, the land of good kingdoms and good people, by Prince Ben (son of King Beast and Queen Belle). And then high school stuff with magic and royalty happens.

Review:

YouTube loves (or hates) me so much that it recommended this video to me a few days ago:

AND I WAS HOOKED, oddly enough. I couldn’t stop laughing at the whole EDM/dubstep feel of the song (so far away from the dramatic ballads and pop team songs of High School Musical), and I couldn’t get the song out of my head for hours after.

So right after its release, I got a copy of the movie. I didn’t really have high hopes for it –the set and costumes looked unimpressive, the plot would probably be one big cliche, and good would most likely win. Unsurprisingly, that was all true. Yet surprisingly, I had fun. The movie was just fun. The film was packed with hilarious moments, heartfelt lessons, storybook references and high school drama (a pleasure).

This isn’t an award-winning film by any stretch, but some story arcs really hit the heart, and the protagonists are all charismatic enough to pull off whatever’s missing. I had a bit of a tough time relating to the main protagonist, Mal, either because of unconvincing acting or bad writing, but the rest of the crew really pulled it off (I love them all equally, but I love Evie best). The introduction and role of other descendants and side characters added much to the feel of the movie.

For a musical, the songs weren’t that much of a hit –I feel like they could have done equally as well without the production numbers, but then I suppose I wouldn’t have gotten ‘Rotten to the Core’ (the only song that stuck, honestly) if this was just a regular film.

GO WATCH IT!
