This photo dump disguised as a blog post covers our first two days in TOKYO.
I still look out of the windows in airplanes; I still think there are exciting adventures in store. 28 March 2015
TIPS
As I’ve mentioned in the previous post, try looking at the option of buying the Tokyo Subway Pass, which covers (if I remember correctly) the Metro and Toei Line. There are a lot of public and private lines running through the whole city, but I find the Metro line to be the most relevant to the places we wanted to visit.
Also, don’t assume there’s wi-fi in Tokyo just because it’s a techie city or whatever. Instead, what the people do is they rent pocket wi-fis (I think they can give coverage to up to 5 devices?) for maybe 50 USD for 5 days or so, I’m not entirely sure. But staying connected is really important for the modern traveller, so be sure to have access to the internet!
Day 1
SHOPPING CULTURE ROPPONGI + Street Museum
My family always says that random pieces of art scattered around are the marks of a rich city.
.
FOOD Hole-in-the-Wall
Be adventurous. Street food vendors don’t seem to be allowed in Japan (at least not in the way they are allowed in Korea), so to get some authentic cheap fare, head over to hole-in-the-wall food shops. There are plenty.
Day 2
SHOPPING Shibuya-Harajuku-Omate-sando
CULTURE Harajuku and Takeshita Dori
SHRINES AND TEMPLES Meiji Shrine
One of my favorite places in Japan. I was inspired by the amount of love and dedication the Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken inspired. Imagine people building a shrine in your name! As I said in an instagram post, “Earlier today I discovered the Waka (traditional Japanese poems) of Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken. “Every morning / We gaze into our mirrors / Which are unblemished; / Oh, that we could attain / Such a purity of soul.”
I’ve tried my hand in writing some Waka since then, but I’m afraid they aren’t worthy for release yet. Here are some photos instead:
SHOPPING CITY LIFE Shinjuku-Sanchome and Shinjuku
FOOD Tsukada Farm in Shinjuku
It’s not really Tokyo food —it’s Hokkaido cuisine. But that only makes it more brilliant!
And the food:
